Subtracting the floating potential Vf of an optimally shielded baffled probe from Vf of a maximally shielded baffled probe yields Ti (and its fluctuation phase) in real time.Fine-structure x-ray spectra have been measured from foils with embedded tracer layers at two laser facilities. A suite of layered foils with thin Ti tracers under varied tamper layers was studied at both the Titan and the ALEPH 400 nm laser facilities, where Ti Heα emission was recorded using a high-resolution Bragg crystal spectrometer. Several indicators of plasma parameters are examined in the spectra, including temperature- and density-dependent line ratios and line broadening from Stark and opacity effects. Spectra indicate that (1) the plasma density at ALEPH is significantly higher than at Titan and (2) the electron temperature is high for near-surface layers at both facilities but drops more quickly with depth at ALEPH. These inferences of plasma conditions are consistent with differing levels of temporal contrast at each laser facility.We present a cryogenic microwave noise source with a characteristic impedance of 50 Ω, which can be installed in a coaxial line of a cryostat. The bath temperature of the noise source is continuously variable between 0.1 K and 5 K without causing significant back-action heating on the sample space. As a proof-of-concept experiment, we perform Y-factor measurements of an amplifier cascade that includes a traveling wave parametric amplifier and a commercial high electron mobility transistor amplifier. We observe system noise temperatures as low as 680-200 +20 mK at 5.7 GHz corresponding to 1.5-0.7 +0.1 excess photons. The ray tracing results for a spherical torus are described, and specific requirements for the antenna tilt adjustment are defined. Some new experimental results are given for using DBS diagnostics on the Globus-M tokamak in order to illustrate its efficiency.A dual-mode auto-calibrating resistance thermometer (DART) is presented. The novel DART concept combines in one instrument the fast and accurate resistance thermometry with the primary method of Johnson noise thermometry. Unlike previous approaches, the new thermometer measures the spectral density of the thermal noise in the sensing resistor directly in a sequential measurement procedure without using correlation techniques. A sophisticated data analysis corrects the thermometer output for both the parasitic effects of the sensor wiring and the amplifier current noise. The instrument features a highly linear low-noise DC coupled amplifier with negative feedback as well as an accurate voltage reference and reference resistor to improve the gain stability over time and ambient temperature. Therefore, the system needs only infrequent calibrations with electrical quantum standards and can be operated over long intervals and a wide temperature range without recalibration. A first prototype is designed for the industrially relevant temperature range of the IEC 60751 (-200 °C to +850 °C); a later extension of the measurement range is being considered. The diagnostic has been recently upgraded, most notably to include four additional graphite tile loops and a new eight-channel digitizer. The previous three loops are all on the low-field side of the tokamak. The measurement capabilities of the system have been expanded by the addition of a new horizontally oriented loop on the low-field side, an additional toroidal loop on the low-field side, and two toroidal loops on the high-field side. The performance parameters of the pulse generator with phase change immersion cooling and forced air cooling are compared. The results show that the maximum repetition rate is increased from 80 to 260 kHz, the pulse drift is significantly reduced from 900 to 200 ps, and the temperature rise of transistors is controlled effectively to enhance the stability of the amplitude. We also studied the influence of temperature on the turn-on and turn-off processes of the transistors to show the importance of heat management under high repetition conditions. With the proof-of-principle experiments on a magnesium alloy under uniaxial tension, we demonstrate the feasibility of the multiscale measurement system for full azimuthal range diffraction measurements with improved resolution and large field of view strain field measurements via x-ray digital image correlation.A new technique to attenuate the unshifted deuterium Balmer-alpha (D-alpha) emission is developed and tested for the fast ion D-alpha (FIDA) diagnostic. The unshifted D-alpha emission, at λ = 656.1 nm, is around three orders of magnitude higher than the desired FIDA emission. Blocking the strong emission feature is essential to prevent blooming and light smearing on the CCD chip and scattered light contamination. The new method is a notch filter approach that utilizes the reflection from ultra-narrow bandpass filters to block the saturating signal before it enters the spectrometer. Collimated light from the fibers is reflected off the filter at a 15° angle of incidence. Measurements show that a center wavelength transmission of 0.006 and a blocking full width at half maximum of ∼1 nm are achieved by using a 200 μm fiber and a 20 mm focal length collimator with two filters.A peak-voltage detection circuit based on a differential comparison structure is proposed to synchronize the control and the input signal. The detection circuit is hence free of reset signals for the sampling capacitors.
