The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities in the overseas market and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for toilets and bidet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure that the next generation would be able to read them. However, many words were being replaced by foreign ones, like dui, which is Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Established in 1917, Toto's beginnings mirrored Japan's growth. In the beginning of its existence, the company produced goods to meet demand for new, modern urban housing. To accomplish this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the nation to make ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which helps to increase efficiency and consistency.
In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began expanding overseas to benefit from sales and new markets. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and distribute other products from other manufacturers in order to complement its own range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the firm’s global market share.
In the 90s, Toto began to concentrate on research and development of water-related appliances. It also redesigned its distribution system to better serve customers and boost profits. The company embraced a just-in time approach to managing its supply chain and used the same method in its sales strategy. This resulted in a greater level customer satisfaction.
Toto has continued to innovate in the toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. The company's first museum opened in 2015 It has exhibits about Toto's iconic products and their evolution and its group companies (all related to ceramics) and the history of plumbing and products such as bath units, and in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also has bathrooms with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.
Before forming Toto members of the group performed session work for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
With a name like Asia, you would think that the group would be prog kings and queens but they're actually a fairly simple rock band. The group started out as a quartet and released two albums - 1979's self titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a diverse musical background their biggest breakthrough was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a huge blockbuster, however it did not come without its own set of issues. Record companies put the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that is a success or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on to give it. Luckily for Toto they delivered and they did it with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their prior experience. Before forming the group, members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic signature has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many contemporary artists.
The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into your. But the album also contains some slower, more jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and should sound completely wrong, but actually is incredibly effective.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes took a turn towards the negative. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band had to go through several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It was not as well-liked as IV. The band was able to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex and less akin to earlier efforts.

The group released their new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour help promote it. In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album called Then and Now. It was the first album in the history of the band that did not include one single track with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
