Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begins an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
