During the recording process of the fifth album The group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to record a new album and change their name with an alternative producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a major tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
